Every year, Tampa Bay homeowners face the reality of hurricane season. Your screen enclosure is one of the most vulnerable parts of your home, but proper preparation can minimize damage and make recovery faster if a storm does hit. The time to prepare is now, before the season starts.
Pre-Season Inspection Checklist
Walk around your entire enclosure in May and check for these issues:
- Loose or bulging panels: Press gently on each panel. Screen should be taut, not saggy or pulling away from the frame.
- Worn spline: The rubber spline that holds screen in the frame channel hardens and shrinks over time. If it is cracked or pulling out of the groove, the panel will blow out in high wind.
- Corroded fasteners: Check the screws and bolts connecting frame sections, especially where aluminum meets concrete or where dissimilar metals touch. Corroded fasteners fail under stress.
- Door hardware: Sliding screen doors, hinges, and latches should operate smoothly and close securely. A door that does not latch properly becomes a weak point in a storm.
- Frame alignment: Look for sections where the frame has shifted, twisted, or separated at joints. Even small gaps weaken the overall structure.
- Existing tears or holes: Any opening in the screen, no matter how small, will expand rapidly under wind pressure.
Reinforce Vulnerable Sections
If your inspection turns up problems, fix them before hurricane season. Replacing a worn panel in May costs a fraction of what emergency post-storm repairs cost in August. Common pre-season repairs include:
- Replacing deteriorated spline on aging panels
- Tightening or replacing corroded fasteners
- Repairing or replacing damaged door rollers and latches
- Re-tensioning sagging screen panels
- Sealing gaps at frame joints
These are exactly the types of small repairs that preventive maintenance catches before they become expensive problems.
Before a Storm Arrives
When a hurricane or tropical storm is approaching Tampa Bay:
- Remove all loose items from inside the enclosure: furniture, pool toys, planters, decorations. These become projectiles in high wind.
- Secure sliding screen doors in the closed and latched position
- If you have screen panels that are already damaged, consider removing them entirely so they do not tear off and damage adjacent panels or your home
- Lower pool water level if directed by local authorities
- Trim any tree branches that overhang or are close to the enclosure
Document Your Enclosure Before the Storm
Take photos and video of your enclosure in its current condition before any storm arrives. Walk around the entire structure and capture every side. This documentation is critical if you need to file an insurance claim afterward. Store the photos in a cloud account so they are safe even if your devices are damaged. For a complete guide on documentation, see our article on how to document screen damage for insurance.
Post-Storm Inspection
After a storm passes:
- Wait until conditions are safe before inspecting. Do not go outside during the eye of a hurricane.
- Walk around the entire enclosure and photograph all damage before touching anything
- Check for structural shifts, not just torn screen. A frame that has moved may not be obvious from inside.
- Look for damage to the roof panels and the connection points where the enclosure meets your house
- If the structure appears compromised, do not enter the enclosure until a professional has assessed it
- Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage, and keep receipts for insurance
Why Pre-Storm Repairs Save Money
After a hurricane, every screen repair company in Tampa Bay is booked solid. Wait times of 4 to 8 weeks are common after a major storm, and emergency pricing reflects the demand. A panel replacement that costs $185 in May might cost significantly more in September when contractors are working around the clock. Pre-season repairs are cheaper, faster, and give you peace of mind heading into the season.
