Managed Repair Programs: Should You Use Your Insurer's Contractor?

More Florida insurers are offering managed repair programs. Here is what they are, how they work, and whether they make sense for screen enclosure repairs.

If you have renewed your homeowners insurance recently, you may have been offered a managed repair program. These programs are growing rapidly in the Florida market in 2026, and they come with real trade-offs that homeowners should understand before signing up.

What Is a Managed Repair Program?

A managed repair program is an arrangement where your insurance company has a network of pre-approved contractors. When you file a claim, the insurer assigns one of their contractors to do the repair. In exchange for agreeing to use their network, you get a discount on your premium, typically 1% to 3%.

The idea is straightforward: the insurer controls repair costs by negotiating bulk rates with their contractors, and they pass some of the savings to you through lower premiums.

The Advantages

  • Lower premiums: The discount is real and applies every year, not just when you file a claim
  • Faster scheduling: The insurer handles contractor assignment, so you do not have to find someone yourself during a busy post-storm season
  • Simplified process: The contractor and insurer communicate directly, reducing paperwork for you
  • Guaranteed work: Most programs include a warranty on the contractor's repairs

The Disadvantages

Here is where it gets complicated, especially for screen enclosure repairs:

  • Limited choice: You cannot pick your own contractor. The insurer assigns whoever is available in their network.
  • General contractors, not specialists: Many managed repair networks use general contractors or handyman services. Screen enclosure repair is specialized work that requires specific skills, tools, and material knowledge.
  • Generic materials: Network contractors may use the cheapest available screen material rather than the best option for your specific situation. There is a real difference between standard fiberglass, pet screen, and super screen.
  • Contractor loyalty: The managed repair contractor is paid by and accountable to the insurer, not to you. Their incentive is to keep costs low for the insurance company.
  • Scope disputes: If the assigned contractor underestimates the repair scope, you may have difficulty getting additional work approved.

Why Specialized Screen Repair Matters

A general contractor can replace a screen panel. But a screen enclosure specialist understands spline sizing, screen tension, frame alignment, and hardware compatibility. They know that Florida's UV exposure and humidity demand specific materials. They can spot corroded fasteners that a generalist might miss, preventing a panel from blowing out in the next storm.

When a managed repair contractor installs a panel with the wrong spline size or incorrect tension, it might look fine initially. But it will fail sooner, and that next failure may not be covered because the original repair was supposedly completed.

Questions to Ask Before Enrolling

  • Does the network include contractors who specialize in screen enclosure repair?
  • What screen materials do network contractors use? Can you specify pet screen or super screen?
  • What happens if you are not satisfied with the network contractor's work?
  • Can you opt out of the program for a specific claim and use your own contractor instead?
  • What is the actual premium savings, and does it justify the trade-offs?

Your Right to Choose

In Florida, you always have the right to choose your own contractor for repairs. Managed repair programs are optional. If you enroll and later decide to use your own contractor for a specific claim, you can, but you may lose the premium discount or face a higher deductible for that claim. Read the program terms carefully before enrolling.

Understanding how your policy covers screen enclosures will help you evaluate whether a managed repair program makes sense for your situation.
