Pet Screen vs Standard Screen: Which Is Right for Your Lanai?

A practical comparison to help Tampa Bay pet owners choose the right screen for their enclosure.

Published March 16, 2026 • ← Back to Blog

If you have pets and a screened enclosure in Tampa Bay, you have probably dealt with torn screen panels. Dogs scratch at the screen when they see squirrels. Cats push through it to get outside. Even well-behaved pets can accidentally tear standard screen just by leaning against it. The question most pet owners face is whether to keep replacing standard screen or upgrade to pet screen.

Here is an honest comparison of both options based on what we see in thousands of Tampa Bay homes every year.

Standard Fiberglass Screen

Standard screen is the default choice for most pool cages and lanais in Florida. It is made from woven fiberglass coated with PVC, and it has been the industry standard for decades. Here is what you need to know:

  • Cost: Starting at $185 per panel replacement
  • Visibility: Excellent. Fine mesh provides a clear view and good airflow
  • UV resistance: Moderate. Lasts 8-10 years in Tampa Bay before becoming brittle
  • Durability: Good for normal use, but vulnerable to pet claws, impacts, and sharp objects
  • Insect protection: Excellent. Standard mesh size keeps out mosquitoes, no-see-ums, and other Florida insects

Standard screen is perfectly fine for homes without pets, or for the upper panels of an enclosure where pets do not make contact. There is no reason to spend more on specialty screen where it is not needed.

Pet Screen

Pet screen is made from a heavier-gauge vinyl-coated polyester mesh. It was designed specifically to resist the kind of damage that pets inflict. Here is the breakdown:

  • Cost: 2-3x the price of standard screen ($370-$555 per panel)
  • Visibility: Good, but slightly less transparent than standard. The heavier mesh is noticeable up close
  • UV resistance: Superior. The thicker material holds up better to sun exposure
  • Durability: 3-7x stronger than standard screen. Resists tears, punctures, and scratches
  • Insect protection: Excellent. Same mesh density as standard for bug protection
  • Lifespan: 12-15+ years in Tampa Bay conditions

Pet screen is noticeably stiffer and heavier than standard screen. When you touch it, you can immediately feel the difference. From across the lanai, it looks similar to standard screen, but standing close to a panel you can see the heavier weave.

The Smart Approach: Mix and Match

Most pet owners do not need pet screen on every panel. Think about where your pets actually make contact with the screen. In most cases, it is the lower panels, the panels near doors, and any panels adjacent to areas where pets spend time. The upper panels that are out of your pet's reach can stay standard.

A typical approach we recommend:

  • Pet screen on the bottom row of panels (where pets push, lean, and scratch)
  • Pet screen on panels adjacent to screen doors (high-traffic areas)
  • Standard screen on all upper panels (out of reach)
  • Standard screen on panels in areas pets do not access

This approach typically costs 30-50% less than doing the entire enclosure in pet screen while solving the actual problem. You get protection where you need it without overspending on panels that will never see pet contact.

When Standard Screen Is the Right Choice

  • You do not have pets
  • Your pets are indoor-only and do not interact with the screens
  • You are on a tight budget and need to maximize coverage
  • The panels are high up and out of any pet's reach

When Pet Screen Is Worth the Investment

  • Your dog scratches or pushes against the screen
  • Your cat has clawed through panels
  • You have replaced the same panels multiple times due to pet damage
  • You have large, active dogs that play near the enclosure
  • You want the longest possible lifespan between replacements

What About Super Screen?

Super screen is another option that offers maximum durability. It is even stronger than pet screen and provides the best UV resistance available. However, it costs about the same as pet screen and is overkill for most pet situations. Super screen makes the most sense for homeowners who want absolute maximum longevity regardless of whether they have pets. In areas with heavy storm exposure or where trees regularly drop debris on the enclosure, super screen is a solid choice.

The Bottom Line

If your pets are damaging your screens, pet screen on the affected panels is worth the investment. It costs more upfront but eliminates the cycle of repeated repairs. Mix it with standard screen on unaffected panels to keep costs reasonable.
